Friday 25th February – walk **** – Martlesham circuit – sunny and breezy.

Woke to wall-to-wall sunshine with a brisk breeze but from the NW, with the tides not right for the Stour and not the best direction for Levington, after a WhatsApp chat with Robert we decided to give today a miss and hopefully better luck over the weekend? So, exercises after breakfast with the sun streaming in through the patio door making it feel like a summers day which it was not outside as it was a bit on the nippy side! Mag and I then decided to make a flask for our Bovil to drive over to the lovely church at Martlesham to see if the crocus flowers are out as it was this time last year, they were fantastic! We arrived at the church around 12.30 and although the flowers were not quite as good as last year the churchyard was still full of crocus, snowdrops and a few daffodils, pretty as a picture. With a dodgy heel we decided against the longer walk to Kyson Point on the other side of Martlesham Creek so instead headed slightly inland doing a nice walk across farmland but also leading down to the creek. We passed a really friendly Robin in a tree which let us get really close before continuing, seeing two Egyptian geese in a field, then on to the ‘Coles’ bench in a small area of newly planted trees and stopped for lunch as it was out of the wind. It was lovely sitting in the sun with banks of fluffy clouds passing overhead. Carrying onto the creek the paths got more wet and muddy making walking slow going. The tide was low on the River Deben and a few birds were feeding including Godwits, Oyster Catchers, Widgeon. We carried on the muddy path, Mag turned left and headed back to the church while I carried onto the small boatyard then up the steep steps and back to the van with loads of Blue Tits in the hedgerow. Home for cuppa and cake and learned I had another pic in the local paper, it has been a great week for published photos:)
